Syrian Support Project

Syrian Support Project

Since the arrival of Syrian refugees to the UK we have been supporting them through the Resettlement Programmes and have been supporting those from Brent, Westminster and Barnet. In particular we are working closely with Barnet Council, who recently hosted 50 Syrians in the Borough as well as the Safe Passage, a registered charity  which has helped to reunite around 200 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children from France, Greece, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Afghanistan, Bulgaria and Syria with their relatives in the UK.

Following our participatory approach, we held meetings and discussions with our Syrian clients and the following activities were established as their chosen activities:

  • One to one Emotional Support for Syrian Refugees

Many of the families and unaccompanied children coming to the UK are likely to have been traumatised by their experiences and this has profoundly affected their physical and mental health. NCG managed to recruit a qualified Arabic-speaking Counsellor who provides emotional support to the above clients every Thursday.

  • Mothers & Toddlers ESOL class for Syrian mothers

Since April 2017 NCG has been running an ESOL class for Syrian mums with toddlers and babies under 5.

  • Homework Club

The children of refugees face the challenges of disrupted education, cultural confusion, lack of knowledge of English and the UK education system and parents who cannot provide homework support. Therefore NCG set up the Homework Club (Maths and English) every Sunday.

Football for Unaccompanied Minors

Through our partnership work with the Safe Passage we are supporting 45 young unaccompanied minors who arrived in the UK through the Governments Dubs Scheme. These Young refugees from the Calais have recently arrived to the UK and can be very isolated, as they have their families sponsoring them to leave the refugee camp in Calais they are not entitled to any support.

With the aim to create a stimulating environment which would enable them to socialise, make friendship and enjoy the holidays, the young people chose to have regular football training with the support of a professional coach.
